The art of mis-direction - DVD-Video

Is it just me or has no one really noticed that DVD-Video is in fact practically speaking less functional than VHS? The one feature I constantly use as a viewer and VJ is the fast forward button and now, on most players, I'm limited to a slower speed. OK sure there's chapters but that's a crapshoot of the first order. Can I have my linear playback system back please Mr Manufacter?

I agree that video had a much more intuitive "feel" to the forward and rewind functions, and on a good player was really fast to use. DVD though ususally gives you 2x, 4x, 8x and 20x forward AND rewind with no loss of quality - (or a subset of those) at least it does on my 3 DVD players and on all players on the PC desktop. The exception is some awkward files which will not allow any fast forward or rewind at all when played in desktop players.
I also miss being able to edit on professional video recorders though, no-one evens wants to hear of that format anymore.
