BritShorts

Notes on conversation with Simon Young, BritShorts

No standard reference to short film sales figures. UK market too small to warrant anyone collating figures.

Top selling shorts can make 20-30K world-wide for a few years, typically through broadcast sales. These titles tend to be very original with a good balance between art and commercial appeal. 15K/year is otherwise a successful sales figure with average figures being around 7K/year (for shorts that are good enough to win distribution).

Many buyers do not want to pay more than 300 euros.

BritShorts is preparing UMD compilations for Sony PSP.

Enter the Dragons

I've applied to the BBC show the Dragon's Den. Here's what I put in the application for £200K.

One line: The future of films is sampling culture. We make subscription-based film worlds that turn any film into interactive entertainment.

Exec Summary: MOD Films is a production company developing a new paradigm - "re-mixable film DVD" titles for home theatres and an online subscription model that works for entertainment, education and corporate video titles. Our patent-ready business methods enable productions of any sized budget to be purpose-built for wider interactivity and be made more directly re-usable, more distribute-able and of course more profitable for a wider range of purposes.

MOD Films received a NESTA Inventions award in 2004 to develop a world-first pilot. The product is a "film world" - a short 35mm film, a software demo, and a film distribution system in one.

We seek further investment to consolidate our team and technology.

Comic video

Had a good brainstorm with Jon today about how to introduce the re-mixable part of the project. What we came up with was the idea (mainly Jon's) of starting with the comic (25 stills) rather than the film itself and introducing the film asset library via a cut-down selection of material that brings this comic to life.

Must get more feedback and get this running within the demo asap.

Why Can't I Patent My Movie

Why Can't I Patent My Movie?

Patents and movies in the same sentence is asking for trouble. My head hurts.
